Precious, semi-precious, fine, ornamental and natural stones: What is the difference?
As a jewelry designer of bracelets , rings , earrings , pendants and necklaces , we offer you jewelry with precious, fine, natural or ornamental stones , but do you understand the difference between these terms?
Precious stones : the queens of jewelry
Fine stones : a universe with a thousand facets
There are 4: Diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald ... The queens of jewelry, rare and dazzling for exceptional jewelry. While some gemstones , such as diamonds, fetch exorbitant prices due to their rarity and exceptional quality, there are also more affordable gemstones. Indeed, the value of a precious stone depends on several criteria such as its size, color, clarity, size and provenance. Thus, a small diamond, of less intense color or with visible inclusions will be more accessible than a large diamond, of bright color and without inclusions.
Amethyst , citrine, tourmaline, aquamarine ... An infinite universe of colors and shapes for personalized jewelry creations. Don't get me wrong, while fine stones are generally more affordable than precious stones, that doesn't mean they can't have great value. Indeed, certain fine stones , such as Paraíba tourmaline or black opal , can achieve very high prices due to their rarity and exceptional beauty. In addition, the quality of a fine stone , just like that of a precious stone , depends on several criteria such as its size, its color, its clarity, its size and its origin.
Natural stones : a return to basics
Ornamental stones
Whether precious, fine or ornamental , natural stones come directly from the earth , without artificial treatment . Their raw and imperfect beauty gives the jewelry an undeniable charm. Authentic and raw, a moonstone bracelet whispers lunar secrets, an opal ring radiates iridescent nuances, turquoise earrings evoke distant journeys, a rose quartz pendant diffuses gentle energy or an eye necklace of tiger instills a protective force.
Ornamental stones , sometimes called semi-precious stones or colored stones , This broad group includes opaque or translucent stones used in jewelry , sculpture, decoration and many other areas. They are distinguished from precious stones by their more common nature and their more accessible price.
Unlike precious stones , which are limited to four categories ( diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald ), ornamental stones encompass a wide variety of types, colors and textures. There we find turquoise with exotic shades, lapis lazuli with celestial patterns, agate with multicolored layers, jasper with unique designs, tiger's eye with protective stripes, and many others.
Semi-precious stones: a common but banned term in gemology
If the term " semi-precious stones " is still widely used in everyday language , it is important to note that it no longer has any official value in gemmology , the science of precious stones. Indeed, since 1995, the International Confederation of Jewelry, Goldsmithing and Watchmaking Arts (CIBJO) has formalized a clear and precise nomenclature of precious stones, recognizing only four categories: diamond, ruby , sapphire and emerald.
Why this decision? The use of the term " semi-precious " was a source of confusion and inaccuracy, as it encompassed a broad and disparate category of stones with very different values and characteristics. This unique classification now allows for better transparency and fairer communication on the precious stone market.
However, it is important to emphasize that the abandonment of the term "semi-precious" in gemology does not mean that the stones concerned have lost their value or beauty. On the contrary, these stones, today grouped under the more generic name of " fine stones or ornamental stones ", continue to be appreciated for their vibrant colors, their unique textures and their symbolic properties.
Whatever your choice, precious, fine, natural or ornamental stones will enhance your creations of bracelets, rings, earrings, pendants and necklaces and will bring a unique touch to your jewelry.
